Former Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel best described the city’s approach to energy in this brief statement. “Chicago is continuing to invest in the industries of tomorrow in order to create the jobs we need today. Leading in alternative energies supports the kind of sustainable economic development and cost savings for our homeowners and businesses that we need.” Part of how the city Is addressing its needs is through the Retrofit Chicago program. Currently, the city spends $170 M in energy consumption each year. One of the objectives of the plan is to reduce costs by $20 M by upgrading energy infrastructure which will generate 2,000 new jobs in energy efficiency, construction and supporting services. The retrofit plan also similarly addresses commercial and residential construction and rehabilitation projects.
