Buenos Aires, capital of the top renewable energy country in Latin America, Argentina, is benefiting from the billions in foreign investment in what is described as the hottest wind power market in the world. It wasn’t always like this. Three short years ago, Argentina was near bankruptcy. The government owned power utility was a serious drain on the economy. Argentina is home to the windiest part of Latin America and the new president decided to privatize the utility. To accomplish this, a series of auctions for long term power contracts were conducted. Billions of energy investment dollars flooded the country, energy costs plummeted, and thousands of new jobs were created. Today, Buenos Aires represents the third-largest market for Vestas, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer.
