Fishing, farming, and tourism have taken a back seat in Aberdeen, Scotland’s third largest city, since it became the center of the U.K.’s oil and gas industry. The North Sea sites produce about a million barrels per day. Developing efficiencies and new technologies for offshore production is the primary focus of the Oil and Gas Technology Centre in Aberdeen. Funded by the Scottish government to the tune of £180 million, the center is the hub of both academic research and technology testing. Fear that the North Sea field is very much in Brownfield status with decommissioning at the top of the priority list for many stakeholders, Aberdeen is taking steps to diversify to renewable energy and broaden its energy mix. The Private Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group is working to facilitate major renewable projects by attracting major energy investments in the region.
