Mexico City is important to the nation’s energy industry principally because it is the seat of government. Mexico has some of the best natural terrain for wind and solar energy and it had made substantial progress in growing those renewable sources as a primary source of electricity. Wind production went from 2360 megawatts in 2014 to 5382 in 2019. Solar production soared from 166 megawatts to 2900 in the same time period. But then there was an election and the new president wants to take back the electrical generation from private companies and return it to a national corporation. President Lopez Obrador wants to focus on the nationally owned oil business and has cancelled two major transmission projects required to bring renewable power to market. The future of energy in Mexico appears to be a reflection of the past.
